Yellow earth pigments have been used for millennia.
In our study, we explore whether similar pigments can be more effectively distinguished using Raman spectroscopy. Our findings show that single-particle measurements are more time-consuming, but they provide more precise and reliable results. This approach enables the identification of even subtle differences in mineral composition.
It is particularly well suited for rapid, preliminary classification of pigments and can contribute to a better understanding of their origin. For a comprehensive analysis, however, additional techniques such as FTIR, LIBS, or SEM-EDS remain essential. We applied these methods to the same samples, demonstrating how they complement each other in a meaningful way.
